Hello readers! TEDxOhioStateUniversity is incredibly excited to present a recap of our first salon event of the year: Vital. Here at TEDxOhioStateUniversity, we hold various intimate events throughout the year where members of the Ohio State community can hear ideas worth spreading for free that are called salon events.
We hold these salon events multiple times throughout the year, so if you’ve ever wanted to attend a ted event, our salon events are perfect! They are smaller, free, and food is provided at the event. Our salon events are STEP PDC approved, so if you need a PDC to attend, come to our salon events!
We had our first salon event of the year, Vital, on September 26th in the Interfaith Prayer & Reflection room in the Union. Vital generated discussions revolving around the state of our healthcare system and where it's heading. A lot of the talks had a college student focus, and the audience chimed in with their questions and further inquiries about the presented talks!
The event presented three speakers who each shared their perspectives on how the healthcare system affects college students.
Our first speaker was Jacob Kenneally, a CSE undergraduate student, who discussed how our routines can affect us. He's a student researcher for Ohio State's Foods for Health Discovery where he utilizes scientific approaches to provide evidence for the vast impact food, nutrition, and lifestyle have on our ability to heal. We heard his narrative about his journey to becoming aware of lifestyles and how they affect everything we do in life.
Our second speaker was Abby Rinderle, who founded Student Advocates for Sexual Health Awareness which hosted Sex Week at OSU last year! Abby's talk was centralized around how our knowledge of sexual education can have an impact on our relationship with the healthcare system as a whole. She explored how our perceptions of sexual education have impacted the way we take care of ourselves. We aren’t taught adequate sexual education, which has created this cloud of uncertainty to how we approach the healthcare system, especially when it relates to the health of our sex and sexuality.
Our third speaker was Smit Patel, who is a Doctorate of Pharmacy candidate here at Ohio State University. He has an extensive background working within the healthcare arena with 8+ years of work experience in healthcare. His talk disclosed his theories on how to break into this unjust 300B market to fight the raging cost of healthcare using innovative technology. He demystified the cost-related topics of the healthcare system and introduced how technologies can make healthcare more transparent and accessible to the general public.
Vital was an incredible experience for all who attended. There were audience gifts, food, beverages, and ideas worth spreading. If you missed Vital, there will be other events coming up! We have another salon event in the works called What On Earth on November 14th! So mark your calendars for November 14th and follow us on Instagram @tedxohiostateu to keep up with EVERYTHING TedxOhioStateUniversity related.
